It goes without saying that protein is an important part of a healthy diet. But with lots of noise coming from health fanatics, body-builders and even so-called diet experts, it can be tricky understanding exactly how much protein we’re supposed to eat.
Being almond experts, we know a thing or two about protein. In this article we’re going to try and help answer the question, how much protein should we eat? But to do that it’s good to first look at the reason we should eat protein in the first place.
The reason we should eat protein
Protein is in pretty much every tissue in your body. Over 10,000 proteins make you, and protein is vital for our body’s growth and repair.
Your body uses amino acids to create protein, and essential amino acids come from your food. Meat, fish and dairy products are some of the most common products that give you amino acids, but what if you don’t eat these products? The answer to that question is that a wide variety of plant-based foods contain protein, and luckily, our almonds are just one of those foods.
How much protein do you need?
A loose guide from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey suggests that 45g of protein a day for women and 55g for men is required for a healthy, balanced diet. On a plant based diet, that’s roughly two palm-sized portions of nuts, oats and chia seeds a day.
